Day Star Organic Farm

Knowing where your food comes from...

Dear Friends and Family,
Our latest news: Every year we have to re-certify the farm.  It is an amazing journey!  I am so very glad Mark is that smart to know what needs to happen on the application.  Pages of information!  But every time, my husband comes through the application process with flying colors   We praise God for the wisdom to complete these forms!  We are always available to you in helping through this process if you are wanting to certify your land.  Just let us know!  We always look forward in meeting with our inspector, whenever that will be.  It is a great exchange and nice to see them again.    That means that we will still be held accountable for the management of our crops, seedlings and most importantly our soil.  Our soil IS the life of our farm. We are so blessed to continue being part of the Certified Organic Program.  WE ARE EXCITED!!!  We have had someone coming out to spray our entire property with compost tea every quarter.  We are blessed with the number of worms we have seen around the farm as the health our our soil increases.  Thank you Leroy!
Our 100' X 30' seed house has been put on hold pending funds to continue, but we are hoping that sometime in the near future we will be able to resume building.  Life on a farm is never a sure thing and you need alot of flexibility in the planning.
We will be offering seedlings very soon, meaning in the next week or two.  Stay tuned for an update!  And please let us know if there are certain items that you would like to see us carry/grow.  Mark is still re-building our small seedhouse, but never the less we will be selling seedlings.  That will include vegetables, herbs, annual and perennial flowers, natives and rare or hard to find and very unusual. We will be growing pots of grass for your cats consumption.  We will also consider growing your seedlings for your garden or farm.  Just call us and we can discuss that with you.
We will be adding lavender to our farm this spring 2011.  Right now that includes 3 different varieties with many being added as permits.  You will be able to walk through the lavender fields!!  I know I can hardly wait.  We are planning on distilling as well, so in the future you will be able to purchase the certified organic 100% lavender oil as well as other products.  We have been planning a compost tea house as well as a wheatgrass growing room.  We have found that having a temperature controlled environment will be much more beneficial for the growing process as well as being able to grow year round.
We are currently adding to our 1st beneficial garden.  I think this is my most favorite part.  We are planning the location of our 2nd beneficial garden as well as our permanent herb garden and begin digging!  So exciting!!  There are also different gardens popping up around the farm and a fence line, approximately 250 feet, filled with different varieties of rosemary.  This will be a GREAT bee attractor as well as uses for culinary and medicinal purposes.  Do you know that we have over 300 different species of native bees here in Texas?  And that number, I understand, continues to grow!  Another very good reason to NOT spray chemicals.  Bees are very suseptible to chemicals and many die year after year dwindling their population...
We are beginning to add more to the butterfly habitat with as much milkweed as we can squeeze together as well as other butterfly loving plants.  We have an incredible ladybug nursery happening right now at every stage.  I love watching all of this taking place and see our "troops" procreating to do combat for us here on the farm.  We couldn't do it without them which is why it is so important to us to continue growing a welcoming eco-system.
We are praying that we will be growing spring 2011 crops, so stay tuned for more information on that as well.  We will keep you updated!
We have been growing organically since 2007.  We are continuing to move forward with plans for the grand opening of our market on the property in the near future. We are busy!
We want to thank you all who have offered support to us and we are so very grateful for your encouragement, every day.  Please come back to our website often to check for updates and feel free to email us.  If you would like to receive our newsletter, please send us your email address.

Blessings,
Mark, Judy and Russell Sears
